Deputy UK Chief Veterinary Officer, Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA)
Eleanor (Ele) Brown is the UK’s Deputy Chief Veterinary Officer with a focus on national animal health and welfare issues. She works closely with Christine Middlemiss, the UKCVO, and with her counterpart Jorge Martin-Almagro, the DCVO focused on international issues. She was appointed in 2023. As DCVO, Eleanor supports Christine to provide veterinary advice on current issues such as veterinary workforce pressures, domestic and exotic disease control in England, and animal welfare. She is an experienced veterinarian. Before joining the UK government veterinary service in 2010, Eleanor worked in private practice across England with livestock and companion animals. She has spent time with the Veterinary Medicines Directorate working on pharmacovigilance when vaccines against Bluetongue Virus serotype 8 were rolled out. She has a specific interest in animal population level disease control and vaccine evaluation and has published on West Nile Virus and it’s risk of introduction to GB via travel.
