Mission Rabies
)
It all began with a challenge.
In 2013, Mission Rabies came to life with the initial challenge to vaccinate 50,000 dogs against rabies in 30 days across India.
Over 500 vets from 16 different countries arrived in India – where a third of the world’s human rabies cases occur – to volunteer alongside local vets, animal handlers and skilled dog catchers. Working together, they caught and vaccinated as many dogs as they could. Over 63,000 dogs were vaccinated in 30 days.
From there Mission Rabies has gone from strength to strength, in India and around the world. Fast forward eight years and our state-wide public health initiative has led to Goa becoming the first Indian state declared a Rabies Control Area, with zero human rabies deaths reported in Goa since 2018.
But we aren’t stopping there, and you can get involved.
Join Mission Rabies in Goa in October for a mass vaccination drive.
This project is an amazing opportunity to get fully involved in the challenge of mass vaccination; providing lifesaving protection for both the dogs and human communities living within this incredible part of India. Working alongside an experienced local team, you'll see beyond the tourist beaches and put your skills to use at the heart of communities that need it the most!
You'll be based in the coastal district of Salcete, in South Goa, working in teams across assigned wards to achieve the 70% vaccination coverage needed to create herd immunity. You will be trained to use our state-of the art epidemiological Mission Rabies App, used to collect vital vaccination and dog population data and to ensure that our work is scientifically robust.
We welcome all types of volunteers to join our teams, whether a vet, vet nurse, student or non-vet, you can play a crucial role in making a difference!
