Improving our feline patients' hospital journey
This lecture is split into three parts. We will begin by refreshing some feline anatomy, behaviour and communication as well as the importance of reducing stress. I will share tips and tricks from within the nursing world and how to best set the scene in practice, while encouraging fear free handling. I will introduce my Happy Catty Pain Pie: a concept developed in practice, it is an eight part tool to educate about feline pain signalements beyond a numerical pain scoring system. We will then explore analgesic options and pain management. My aim is to empower nurses to be advocates for their patients and be able to exercise their skills and knowledge fully.
- To have a better understanding of feline behaviours and the more subtle ways that they communicate with us.
- To explore the journey of the hospitalised feline patient: from home to home again and ways to improve their stay and advocate at each stage of the journey.
- Confidently be able to assess pain, beyond the use of a scoring system with my Happy Catty Pain Pie.
- Have a basic understanding of the physiology of pain and the multimodal analgesia available.
