Tame your fears: Practical tips on dealing with British wildlife

06 Jun 2024
Clinical Theatre 2
Wildlife

All veterinary professionals have a legal and ethical obligation to treat native wildlife. For many people, wild animals take them way outside their comfort zone, are an intrusion on an already busy day and are generally unwelcome. With the right mindset however, wildlife work is one of the best examples of contextualised care and the ‘vet-led’ team, is nothing to fear, and can be incredibly rewarding. Caring for wildlife appropriately provides a huge opportunity to contribute to animal welfare, but potentially also to biodiversity and conservation. From giving the right advice on reception, through the principles of triage and first aid, to working with wildlife rehabilitation centres and contributing further to our UK ecosystems, this talk with take out the fear out of dealing with British wildlife and show you how this work can be an opportunity for both you and your practice.

  • Realise that wildlife work is not that scary and can be really rewarding.
  • Understand contextualised care for wildlife cases; triage, first aid, euthanasia where appropriate, working with a great rehabilitation centre
  • Set up you practice from reception to clinical care to deal with British wildlife
  • Be part of a team that appropriately gets animals back to the wild, educates the public, and helps biodiversity and conservation
