From Resistance to Results: Responsible Wound Infection Control

11 Jun 2026
BVNA Nursing Theatre
Wound management

This session explores the vital role veterinary nurses play in wound management and antimicrobial stewardship. It will examine how evidence-based nursing interventions can improve wound outcomes while reducing reliance on systemic antimicrobials.

Using a One Health perspective, delegates will consider how accurate wound assessment, effective infection control, appropriate dressing selection, and client education can directly influence antimicrobial use in clinical practice.

The lecture will focus on practical, adjunctive approaches that prioritise local wound control, optimise healing, and minimise unnecessary antimicrobial exposure. Designed to empower veterinary nurses, the session will provide practical strategies to support nurse-led wound care, responsible antimicrobial use, and improved patient outcomes.

  • •Apply evidence-based, adjunctive wound management strategies to support local infection control and optimise healing.
  • •Analyse wound cases to identify opportunities to reduce reliance on systemic antimicrobials while maintaining effective infection control.
  • •Evaluate current wound management practices in relation to antimicrobial stewardship and One Health principles, identifying areas for improvement
