24/7 Provision: Should it still be a requirement?
This session will consider potential impacts on animal welfare, client expectations, workforce sustainability, and the economics of running a practice, especially in rural settings. Through audience discussion, we will examine risks such as delayed treatment, gaps in rural provision (“veterinary care deserts”), fragmented continuity of care, liability, and further strain on recruitment and retention if emergency work relies on goodwill rather than resilient systems. We'll also consider practical alternatives. Could shared rotas, regional networks, dedicated out-of-hours providers, and structured triage help in maintaining welfare safeguards while supporting sustainable careers and viable practices?
