HOT TOPIC: Is mixed practice dead? The risks of losing omnicompetence (conditional licensure in new VSA)

11 Jun 2026
Business, Careers & Debates Theatre

Reform of the VSA could pave the way for conditional licensure of new graduates in the UK, meaning vets no longer need to meet Day One Competencies in all species. Is this the final nail in the coffin for traditional mixed practice? This session will examine the potential consequences of losing omnipotential, including the impact on rural and remote veterinary provision, 24/7 emergency care, career flexibility and the loss of irreplaceable skills.

  • Understand how the concept of conditional licensure could impact omnicompetence
  • Understand the role mixed practice plays in modern veterinary provision
  • Appreciate how loss of omnipotential might impact negatively on animal welfare more generally.
