Spoiler alert! Yes there is.
The benefits of using local anaesthetic agents to achieve a pain free surgical field is well established. There are numerous benefits, we all understand; reduction in volatile anaesthetic agents, reduced pain wind up and more rapid less stressful recovery from surgery to highlight a few. But there are concerns and risks and for some this may inhibit their desire to use these powerful techniques.

During the past five years there has been a significant amount of research focused on improving safety in using these techniques, exploring new products (what even is liposomal bupivicaine?), and even answering the question “Should I mix lidocaine and bupivicaine in the same syringe?”.

This lecture will review recently published literature with the hope of providing guidance on topics including choosing which techniques are safest, what to use & when, and what new developments might we see in the near future.
